What's in it for me?

Participating in this programme will give you access to...

  • Recognised Qualification

In addition, this programme is recognised by the London Assay Office, enabling you to register as a student of precious metal and set up your hallmark, free of charge.

  • Professional Instructors

They have designed this course to ensure they are available to you throughout, teaching, supporting and encouraging you every step of the way.

  • Amazing community

Never underestimate the power of a supportive peer group! Our virtual classroom approach enables you to make new friends from around the world. Imagine having your very own silver clay tribe, cheering you on, celebrating, supporting and offering a virtual hug whenever you need one.

How will I learn?

Each module has a 10 lessons plus bonus materials, consisting of video tutorials and downloads, which are accessed here in Thinkific, our learning management system.  It helps you work through the course, step-by-step, download notes, and repeat lessons if needed.  These lessons are released weekly to ensure you aren't bombarded with information and we can support you, so you don’t have to be available at a specific time, you just pop in and out when YOU can, and go at your own pace.  And all our courses come with a lifetime access guarantee, so do the course as many times as you like and benefit from updates as they are published - all for one enrolment fee.

We also have a Facebook page for general information and sharing - click here to follow us.  In addition each course has a dedicated Facebook group for additional support and you'll be invited to join it when you enrol on a course.  Here you can ask the tutor specific questions, connect with a community of people doing the same work as you and build friendships.  We do live demonstrations here too, great for any tricky areas where you need some additional support, and they are always available in the group so that you can look at them again and again, at any time.

Finally, we hold regular clinics and informal meetings via Zoom.  These help us all keep in touch and enable you to ask questions and share experiences.  Whilst these sessions are held at a specified time and we recommend students join in person, we understand this isn't always possible so they are recorded and the video loaded into the Facebook group so that you can view it there if you miss it.

Such a great learning experience for beginners and people who have been self taught like myself. I learned easier, better ways to accomplish things I had been doing. I also learned new things that would have taken me years to learn. You move along at your own pace and have such amazing support and helpful teachers.

As a fine art practitioner, I have studied a variety of online courses covering Jewellrey design, sculptural work and drawing online before and during the pandemic constantly developing my design practice. This PMC course held by Julie Holt and Helen Drye is by far one of the best in my opinion that I have studied on. It is thoughtfully executed to facilitate all levels of skills in silver clay work. Interesting well bvalanced and educational, keeping your creative execution of each step flowing leaving you with a great collection of work.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I’m paying in instalments – how will that work?

When you enrol, you will make your first instalment plan payment, and then be invoiced for the same amount each month for the term of the instalment plan you chose

  • What if I change my mind?

You can book you place now, and have a 14 day ‘cooling off’ period during which you can cancel your enrolment, no questions asked. After this and once you have started the course, regretfully we would not be able to refund any fees paid. We are very flexible and absolutely understand that sometimes life gets in the way, so are happy for you to defer the course until you are ready to take it in this instance.

  • I need lots of time to order materials at the moment – how will that work?

Before each module starts we will give you a tool and materials list so that you can order supplies as soon as possible. If there are specific suppliers, we will direct you to them.

  • What metal clay will I work with on the course?

You are free to work with the metal clay brand of your choice! All we ask is that you work with a Fine Silver (999) clay that it has a firing range of 599°C/1110°F to 900°C/1652°F as some projects need a lower firing temperature to protect the design. That said, the majority of course projects fire at 800°C/1472°F and up, so you can mix and match your clay brands, according to the project needs.

  • What qualification do you actually get?

Our certification programme is assessed by qualified instructors and certified by Learn Silver Clay Online, much the same as all the other metal clay programmes available. In terms of official qualification, none of the certification/diploma programs offer a formal qualification such as a degree or vocational qualification, but instead they are recognised within the industry in terms of the level of education they provide. The programme teaches tried and tested techniques that provide a solid foundation and understanding of metal clay. It was first launched in the early 2000's by the inventor's of metal clay and has since gone through 3 updates to reflect the advancement of the medium and techniques Where this programme differs from other is we are not aligned with any specific brand, which we believe to be a good thing as all the clays have their own strengths and weaknesses, and understanding this will help you build a deeper knowledge of metal clay. In the past, certification programmes have been designed to showcase a brand and build brand loyalty - ours was previously aligned with PMC and is now brand neutral. This enables us to focus on helping you to really understand metal clay, so you can use that knowledge to choose the clay that will work best for your design – this will help you as both a maker and tutor, should you decide to go down that path. All this said, we know it is a maze to navigate! What we suggest is to focus on the content you will learn and use that that information to help you choose the programme that is best for you. Our programme teaches the broadest range of skills. It is recognised by the Assay office and students are eligible for free hallmarking registration, it also meets the student discount requirements for Cookson Gold.

  • How much time will we need to complete the course?

You can expect to spend on average 3-4 hours per week. Each module takes 18 hours in class, however at home we have more time available and therefore students tend to enjoy the luxury of more time and working at their own pace as they complete the lessons and projects . It takes approximately 3 months to work through each module online, and there is also some flexibility built in for catch-up time too if needed. We would recommend you aim to complete 2 projects per month, but this will vary depending on your time.

  • Do I need a kiln to do this course?

About 2/3rds of the learning projects need to be kiln fired so you will either need a kiln yourself, or access to a kiln. As part of the course, for UK students we offer 2 kiln firings per student, per module - all you need to do is send your pieces to us (we'll advise you how to package them safety) and cover the postage costs. If you're not in the UK, just let us know as we will put you in touch with an in-country firing service.

  • I’m not in the UK, can I still enrol and what will it cost?

Absolutely, yes! Our students come from around the world and the course structure means you don't have to be available at a certain time in order to participate fully. When you enrol, your card provider will apply their exchange rate , and any fees that are applicable, so you'll need to check with them to figure out the exact cost in your local currency.

  • Is there a specific time classes are held? Or can watch I them anytime and repeat if needed?

The only thing that is held at a specific time are our weekly 'coffee breaks'. These are live Zoom meetings held at a time-zone friendly time each week to make it easy for you to join. They are also recorded so you can watch them on replay if not able to attend the live session. The actual course content is released weekly and once released you can return to any of the tutorials as you’ll have lifetime access.

  • How much experience do I need to do this course?

You need to have completed an introductory course before you start as this isn't an absolute beginners course. It's a course for those that have tried that have done some silver clay and now want more … more skills, more opportunities to experiment and best of all more PLAY!!

  • Are the skills I learn transferable to any metal clay?

Yes! You will learn tried and tested techniques that work with all metal clays. The main thing that changes between formulas is the firing and shrinkage rates and we guide and support you with this.

  • What if I need extra one to one support?

You get loads of instructor support when on the programme, however if you feel you need extra one-to-one support at any time, you can purchase sessions just for you to go through lessons, trouble shoot, have demonstrations, and ask questions. These are an additional cost of £25 per 30-minute session. To be honest, no-one has needed it yet, but it's always nice to have the option if you would prefer it

  • How do you assess my work?

We assess your work as you go and also on completion, using photos you submit. The 'as you go' assessments are all about supporting you and keeping you on track, much as we would do in the classroom. This way, by the time you complete the finished project, all should be well with no surprises! Anytime you are not sure of anything, just ask, and as you're part of a great learning community, everyone supports and helps each other

  • How will I get my certificate?

You will be able to download your certificate on successful completion of each module
